Alzheimer’s World Awareness Day: 21st September

How can we help those living with Dementia?

How can we help those living with Dementia? World Alzheimer’s Day takes place every year as part of Alzheimer- Awareness Month: September. It’s an international campaign to raise awareness and highlight issues faced by people who are affected by dementia. Nearly 50 million people live with dementia worldwide and this number is set to rise as our population ages. The theme for this year’s dementia month is ‘know dementia, know Alzheimer’s’ – encouraging people to be equipped with helpful knowledge to understand the signs and symptoms in order for those to get the correct diagnosis and support quickly.

What is Dementia?

The word ‘dementia’ describes a group of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These symptoms often start off small and worsen over time, with the potential to affect daily life. Many often wonder what is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s? Dementia is caused by different diseases that affect the brain. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common of these diseases. This means that dementia is not a disease in its own right. Dementia is the name for a group of symptoms, and there are many different types.

How do Adaptawear help those living with Dementia?

At Adaptawear we create adapted clothing for those who struggle with the restrictions of everyday clothes. Alzheimer’s and dementia can make it difficult for individuals to get dressed by themselves, and can often lead to the person needing assistance with dressing. Adaptive clothing can help make this less stressful. Our range of unique garments include velcro/magnetic shirts, front fastening bras, large openings and elasticated waists all which help the process of getting clothes on and off. It also includes open back nightwear and discreet back opening daywear for easy/fast toileting. Many of our styles are available with VAT relief so do check if you or your loved one are eligible.

We are delighted to share a few of our key styles that can assist dementia sufferers below, however our easy mini brochures are great to download and print if you need to share them with a care home or loved one.
